I heard a great analogy the other day that really resonated with me and reminded me of why we have systems in our business. It was about the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and how often they need to paint it. There are a few different theories on this, however, the truth is that they start at one end and work their way to the other end, that is their SYSTEM. It takes them a few years to paint from one side to the other side, so when they get to the other end they just begin again. The salt in the air from the fog and mist in the Bay Area quickly erodes the paint potentially damaging the steel. They also have contractors who patch and paint parts that erode quicker than others all of the time. If they didn’t have multiple contractors painting the Golden Gate Bridge all the time, the bridge would be compromised and put thousands of lives at risk and potentially crumble.
This got me thinking about real estate and how we are always trying to get a job, task, or activity done so that we can move on to the next one. When we get busy, some of the most important tasks and activities that we should be continuing to do, fall by the wayside. A good example of this is prospecting, marketing, lead generation, and nurturing those oh so important relationships. The reality is that these and most other tasks and activities in our business do not stop, they are never-ending jobs.
Implementing Systems
So, we have to incorporate them into our everyday working schedule and never stop focussing on them. Even better, if we can put SYSTEMS in place to do them for us or have them automated, then we can focus on the tasks and activities that cannot be delegated or automated like meeting people and listing their house, negotiating, networking at the golf or tennis club, and having lots of time off.
If you are not getting enough business or feel like your business is not balanced, ask yourself if you’ve been doing the painting and you will probably realize that the salty air is rusting your structure. Don’t let it crumble, keep up with the painting and maintaining of your bridge by introducing simple systems to your business.
