When Life Gives You Lemons…

…..make lemonade.

With all the things happening around us it is hard to find a positive – we’re facing a range of personal and professional restrictions and very likely a significant market and business slowdown.

I’ve already talked about ways to take control and deal with crises in my most recent blogs, now I’m going to talk about one thing you can do if you find yourself with time on your hands, or isolated at home due to quarantine or a lockdown.

I’ve always been a big proponent of training – formal, informal, you can’t get enough of it and you should never stop doing it. And I think a lack of training is one of the big downsides of the real estate industry.

Now is a great time to invest in yourself. Get your hands on anything you can and build your knowledge and skills.

Get books and audio tapes

Some of my favourites are Brian Tracey, Maximum Achievement, Napoleon Hill with Think & Grow Rich, and Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends & Influence People.

Get on YouTube. Brian Tracy, one of my favourite speakers, has lots available. Share books and recommendations with other agents.

Get creative

Contact a colleague and practice scripts and dialogues over the phone, FaceTime, Skype, Zoom – whatever works for you. We are still available and you can book a call with me at any time for one-on-one training.

Don’t forget more formal training

If you have time on your hands look at some more formal training to really set you up for the future. We have adapted our training to suit the current situation. A few years ago I invested in a Zoom room that allows us to train and connect with our clients if we can’t gather in our office.  We can conduct one-on-one or group training via Zoom from anywhere in the country. We can also continue our Think Tank Thursday (10am-noon) brainstorm, mastermind/support groups/guest speaker sessions via Zoom allowing you to learn and interact with others from your own home.

Start setting goals

Take all that training and put it into action. Get ready to hit the ground running when things improve. I’ve spoken about goal setting before.

Just remember to keep them personal, positive and in the present tense.

To get you started, I’ll share Brian Tracy’s seven step process in achieving a goal:

  1. Decide exactly what you want. The goal must be very simple.
  2. Write it down.
  3. Set a deadline.
  4. Make a list of everything you can think of to do to achieve this goal. Keep adding to the list.
  5. Organize the list by priority, what do you need to do first, second etc.
  6. Take action on your list. Start with number 1 and complete that step. Task completion is important.
  7. Do something every day that moves you one step towards your goal.
